Rev’d Mike stated last month that the new year can bring fresh starts and
fresh challenges. So as we head further into the new year I though I would
name this next month Fresh February! One of the reasons for this is
because as my role as a pioneer minster my role is to set up fresh
expressions of church.
So what is a fresh expression of church ? Well the national fresh
expressions website describes it as this.
A fresh expression is a form of church for our changing culture, established
primarily for the benefit of people who are not yet members of any church.
It will come into being through principles of listening, service,
incarnational mission and making disciples; It will have the potential to
become a mature expression of church shaped by the gospel and the enduring
marks of the church and for its cultural context.
serve those outside church;
listen to people and enter their culture; make discipleship a priority; form
Over the past 9 months of being here I have been doing a lot of listening,
(my role in the barbers has been to listen to where people are at in their
faith journeys) asking questions and hearing the stories of local people.
Listening to what God is already up to and joining in is what mission is all
So as February begins we hope to continue to explore new ways of being
church, this will begin by inviting those people I have met to a gathering
at mine and Becky’s house once a month on a sunday afternoon, for some food
and the chance to explore the Christian faith in a way that is culturally
relevant to them.
It is early days still and this may not be the right way to go about things,
but with all Fresh Expressions initiatives it is all about pushing the doors
to see if they open and if they do then the results might look a lot
different from what we know and understand as church. This way of doings
things is now an integral part of being The Church Of England, fresh ways of
being church are not new ways of being church replacing the more inherited
models but rather complementary, working along side, allowing us to reach
more and more people with the good news of Christ. Please pray for all
of those stepping out and seeking what God is doing in the lives of our
wider communities of Marton and Coulby Newham.
Grace and Peace
